GB News‘ breakfast programme was interrupted for major breaking news as King Charles became the first-ever Royal to publicly release his personal tax bill. Away from Stephen Dixon and Ellie Costello’s panel, reporter Cameron Walker delivered the major news alongside an interactive screen. He shared: “This is the first time the British monarch has published his income tax; £12.9 million is what King Charles paid last financial year. That makes him one of the top 100 UK taxpayers. Meanwhile, Prince William, his son and heir to the throne, paid £7.6 million. Between them, since the King took the throne in 2022, more than £50 million has been spent.”

In a major blow to British taxpayers, Cameron also confirmed that Buckingham Palace will no longer be a royal residence while undergoing renovations. The GB News star stated: “Buckingham Palace is unlikely ever to be lived in by a British monarch again. That is despite the almost £370 million of public money being spent on resurfacing, which is due to be finished next year.”

The reporter continued: “We were all told when this resurfacing was happening that the King would move back into Buckingham Palace once the works are complete. But the King and the Queen have decided that they will remain in Clarence House.

“As for Prince William, sources close to him say that Forest Lodge, the eight-bedroom mansion in Windsor where he resides with his family, is his forever home, so he’s probably not going to be moving into it either.

“The other big problem with Buckingham Palace was all of the very old heating and electricity cables, meaning that it was at huge risk of catastrophic floods or a fire and that it was justified in their eyes for the huge amounts of money being spent on it.”

Cameron reported: “A lot of people are asking questions, is it actually worth that money?”

When work began in 2017, Buckingham Palace was expected to remain the monarch’s primary residence as it had been since Queen Victoria became sovereign in 1837.

Instead, it will remain the primary venue for ceremonial and official functions, including the reception of foreign dignitaries.

James Chalmers, the king’s treasurer and keeper of the privy purse, said: “It is and will remain monarchy HQ, the crown jewel of our national buildings, with the sovereign’s standard flying proudly from the roof whenever his majesty is in London.”

King Charles’s tax bill reveal comes after members of the Royal Family promised greater transparency about their finances amid growing criticism following the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022.
