A royal expert has claimed to have learned details of an alleged “plot” to return Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the UK. The couple, now living in California, following their exit from the Royal Family in 2020, are visiting the UK next month. They are expected to bring their children, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet, with the family having been offered a stay at a royal residence. It is not known whether the King will meet his grandchildren, as they last saw each other in 2022 during the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

This is all despite Harry telling the BBC last year that he “can’t see a world in which” he would bring his wife and children back to Britain. There has, however, been one key development – the Prince is satisfied with security arrangements, which he previously took the Home Office over, and lost.

Royal expert Richard Eden has explained why the so-called “Project Thaw” to heal relations between the King’s second son and the Firm is failing. Firstly, relations remain difficult between Harry and the Prince and Princess of Wales, he wrote for The Daily Mail. William does not want anything to do with his brother, a source said.

Richard adds that the second reason the supposed plan is not succeeding is that there seems to be no movement regarding the little enthusiasm the British public has for Harry and Meghan.

In April, YouGov reported that they remain unpopular, with only 30% and 20% having positive views, respectively.

The pollster added that they are “looked upon more favourably by young Britons than their elders (although they are still net unpopular across all generations)”.

Only 19% of over-65s have a positive view of Prince Harry, data suggested, compared to 35% of 18-24 year olds.

In addition, just 10% of the oldest Britons feel favourably towards Meghan, compared to 31% of their youngest counterparts.

It comes as it was confirmed on Thursday that the King and Queen will not live at Buckingham Palace once almost £370million of refurbishment work to make the landmark fit for purpose has been completed.

A spokesperson added that it “will remain Monarchy HQ, the crown jewel of our national buildings, with the sovereign’s standard flying proudly from the roof whenever His Majesty is in London, just as it has done since accession”.
